A vacuum leak happens when unmetered air enters the engine through cracked hoses, gaskets, or intake components. This extra air can cause the engine to run lean—resulting in rough idle, misfires, or a check engine light. Common sources include the intake manifold gasket, PCV hose, or brake booster hose. Diagnosing involves checking for hissing sounds, using smoke machines, or spraying carb cleaner to locate the leak.
