Each wheel in a vehicle with ABS has a speed sensor that constantly sends information about how fast the wheel is spinning to the ABS control module. If the sensor detects that a wheel is decelerating too quickly—signaling a potential lock-up—the module adjusts braking pressure accordingly. A damaged or dirty sensor can give false readings or stop working, often causing the ABS warning light to turn on. These sensors are usually mounted near the wheel hub or axle and may be exposed to road debris or corrosion.
