Brake shoes and drums are found in drum brake systems, mostly on the rear wheels of older or economy vehicles. The brake shoes press outward against the inside of the spinning drum to create friction and stop the car. Unlike disc brakes, drum brakes have more enclosed components, which can trap heat and debris. Over time, the shoes wear down and need replacing. If you hear squeaking, grinding, or feel weak braking from the rear, it may be time to inspect the shoes and drums.
