Brake fluid is the hydraulic fluid that transfers pressure from the brake pedal to the brake components at each wheel. It's stored in a reservoir near the master cylinder and must withstand high temperatures and pressure. Over time, brake fluid can absorb moisture from the air, reducing its effectiveness and causing a spongy brake feel. That's why manufacturers recommend flushing the fluid every few years. Low or dirty fluid can be a sign of leaks or worn components.
