Brake pads are friction materials mounted inside the brake calipers. When the brakes are applied, the calipers press the pads against the rotors to slow or stop the car. Pads wear down over time and must be replaced periodically—usually every 30,000 to 70,000 miles depending on driving habits. Worn pads can make squeaking or grinding noises and reduce braking performance. Keeping them in good shape is essential for safe stopping.
